Tuesday 9 September 1952

“We’re so late.” Pearl shook Ruby awake. “Can you get moving?”

Ruby rolled her eyes at Pearl’s increasingly ridiculous need to get to work early.

“I’ll be waiting for you in the car.” Pearl dashed down the stairs while Ruby was still dressing.

The horn tooted—a long accusing blast.

“Damn.” Ruby raced down the stairs and threw some cheese and bread into a paper bag. Lettie fluttered forlornly in her wake.

Gran waved a wooden spoon coated in grey sludge. “You’re not having any porridge?”

“No, thank you.” Ruby checked the grandfather clock. It was only quarter past seven.

She stopped rushing, and walked out of the green kitchen door, past the henhouse and out to the old Dodge chugging in the driveway.

Pearl rolled her eyes. “I thought you’d never be ready.”

“What’s got you in such a panic? It’s not even that late.”

Pearl shrugged. “Keeping Matron happy…”

Ruby and Lettie were barely in the car when Pearl slammed on the accelerator. She swerved out of the driveway and skidded down the road.

“Boggarts and brownies,” Lettie swore.

“What in the Underworld’s got into you?” Ruby asked, “You don’t start till eight.”

“She’s meeting up with those boys,” Lettie said.

Pearl shook her head. “Just getting an early start. I’ll see you at fencing later tonight.”

“Goddam, I forgot the bag.”

“I got it,” Pearl said.

Sure enough, it was in the backseat. “Thank you.”

“Yeah, well, I might be a bit late to practice.”

“Why’s that?” Ruby asked.

“Nothing, nothing.” Pearl pretended to concentrate on the road. “Isn’t this your stop?”

“See you later,” Ruby called, jumping out.

“See ya.” Pearl slammed the door and sped off.
