âWeâre so late.â Pearl shook Ruby awake. âCan you get moving?â
Ruby rolled her eyes at Pearlâs increasingly ridiculous need to get to work early.
âIâll be waiting for you in the car.â Pearl dashed down the stairs while Ruby was still dressing.
The horn tootedâa long accusing blast.
âDamn.â Ruby raced down the stairs and threw some cheese and bread into a paper bag. Lettie fluttered forlornly in her wake.
Gran waved a wooden spoon coated in grey sludge. âYouâre not having any porridge?â
âNo, thank you.â Ruby checked the grandfather clock. It was only quarter past seven.
She stopped rushing, and walked out of the green kitchen door, past the henhouse and out to the old Dodge chugging in the driveway.
Pearl rolled her eyes. âI thought youâd never be ready.â
âWhatâs got you in such a panic? Itâs not even that late.â
Pearl shrugged. âKeeping Matron happyâ¦â
Ruby and Lettie were barely in the car when Pearl slammed on the accelerator. She swerved out of the driveway and skidded down the road.
âBoggarts and brownies,â Lettie swore.
âWhat in the Underworldâs got into you?â Ruby asked, âYou donât start till eight.â
âSheâs meeting up with those boys,â Lettie said.
Pearl shook her head. âJust getting an early start. Iâll see you at fencing later tonight.â
âGoddam, I forgot the bag.â
âI got it,â Pearl said.
Sure enough, it was in the backseat. âThank you.â
âYeah, well, I might be a bit late to practice.â
âWhyâs that?â Ruby asked.
âNothing, nothing.â Pearl pretended to concentrate on the road. âIsnât this your stop?â
âSee you later,â Ruby called, jumping out.
âSee ya.â Pearl slammed the door and sped off.
